Welcome to Blue Class.
We are a very happy class who believe we can do anything if we try.
Here is our class banner.
This is our Mascot
My name is Patch and I belong to Blue Class. I love reading! Children can come and read to me and my friends in my home in Blue Class. Sometimes I will come home with you where you can cuddle up with me and share a story.
I like to keep a diary of all my travels so please write the title of the book we share on the page with your name on. You could also add a photograph or a drawing of us together and stick it on the page.
Please remember to bring me back to school on the next Monday so that I can see all my friends in Blue Class.

In Maths we have been working with the numbers 0 to 10. We have been counting forwards and backwards in steps of 1 and sequencing numbers into the correct order. We have been trying really hard to form the digits correctly when writing them. We have also been trying to identify missing numbers within a sequence.
! remember
when we count forwards ---> the number gets bigger
when we count backwards <--- the number gets smaller
Reminders for next week
Thank you for your support in ensuring a smooth start to our new school year
Thank you for taking the time to share in our learning journey ... check back next week to see where it takes us next.
This week we have been learning about our 5 senses. We have been learning which part of the body is associated with each sense.
We have learned that our:
We tested our sense of hearing listening to lots of different sounds and trying to guess what they were ... Blue Class were very good at this
We used our sense of touch putting our hands into a feely bag and feeling lots of different textures we thought of adjectives to describe what we could feel.
We used all of our senses when we explored how to make POPCORN!
We could see it was orange before cooking but white after cooking!
We could hear it POP in the microwave as it cooked
We could feel it was hard before cooking yet soft after cooking
We could smell the popcorn as it was cooking
We could taste the sugar on the yummy popcorn
We explored the sense of taste by trying different foods that were bitter, sour, sweet and salty. We looked closely at our taste buds and their position on the tongue. We learned that different parts of our tongue give different tastes.
![]() |
Which of these tastes would you give to each of these foods?
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
We are very proud of Blue Class because everyone tasted all of the foods
It was very hard to tell the difference between bitter and sour!

This week we have been finding 1 more and 1 less than a given number between 1 - 10.
We have learned that:
We have tried to use the language: greater than (more than), less than, equal to, when comparing 2 groups of objects.
Can you answer these questions?
Complete the sentence using 1 of these words: more, less

Thank you for sharing in our learning journey
This week in topic we have been thinking about how we change as we grow. We looked at each growth stage carefully and talked about what we can do or not do at each stage. We shared baby pictures and talked about what we could do now as a child. It was interesting to see how much we had changed from when we were a baby!
Here Jaxon has sequenced the human timeline from a baby to an elderly person

In Maths this week we are beginning to answer addition questions.
Here Aeron has split his 'whole' number into the 2 parts using the part-whole model and Alfie has used red and yellow counters to write the number calculation using the + and = symbols 0 red counters + 3 yellow counters = 3 counters altogether
![]() |
![]() |
These methods help us to understand the 3 parts to a number calculation.
Notes for Next Week
Next week we are thinking about what type of house we live in. Please could you talk to your children about where they live and their address. Have a look at the front of your house:
Welcome back we hope you had a lovely half term break and are ready and refreshed for our new term. This term we are asking
How Do I Play With It?
We launched our Topic with our day trip to Sudbury Hall Museum of childhood.
Here we got to look at and play with different types of toys from over the years. We looked at the materials they were made from and thought about how we played with them. We sorted the toys using the words push, pull or push and pull thinking how do we play it?

Reminders for next week
On Monday 12th of November we are wearing odd socks to school as part of our anti-bullying week
Over the last few weeks we have been:
Learning about the history of the Teddy Bear
![]() |
We shared the story of Theodore Roosevelt an American President who went out hunting one day and refused to shoot a bear. A shopkeeper saw a cartoon drawing of this and decided to make some bears. He asked Theodore, otherwise known as 'Teddy' if he could use the name Teddy to name them Teddy bears.
We looked at how the Teddy bear has changed over the years
Oliver used this information to sort various pictures of bears
![]() |
Can you see how the bears are different?
We have also looked at the materials toys are made from.
What do you notice about the materials used for older toys and materials used for newer toys?
Here are some old toys.
![]() |
What materials are they made from?
Can you explain why they are made form a particular material?
We have also looked at some old toys and thought about how we would play with them. We used the words Push ... Pull ... or Push and Pull to explain this.

In Maths this week we have been finding 1 more or 1 less than a number. To support our learning we used a numberline to jump forwards to find 1 more and backwards to find 1 less. We looked at how when we jump forward the number gets bigger and when we jump backwards the number gets smaller.
We started to look how 1 more is the same as +1 and how 1 less is the same as -1
We also tried to solve problems such as:
What comes next?
3 + 1 = 4
4 + 1 = 5
5 + 1 = 6
Well Jack Hopper you looked at each calculation and spotted how the first number was 1 more than the previous calculation and used this to say what comes next
Can you say what comes next ?
Thank you for taking the time to see what we have been learning about this week check back next week to see where our learning journey takes us next !

Reminders for next week
Tuesday 3rd October - Childrens Photgraphs
Thursday 5th October - Names of houses have been chosen and children will find out which house they are in.
Thank you for taking the time to share in our learning journey
This week in Topic we have been learning about the features of a village. We looked at a typical village and discussed what features it had such as a local shop, a school, a pub and a Doctor's surgery. We then discussed if there were any similarities we could notice between these pictures and the village of Woodville, our surrounding area. Children noticed that Woodville has a Tesco, a Chip Shop, Pizza Shop and a Post Office which the other village did not have.
We have looked at a map of the route we will be walking around Woodville next week and identified some of the features we might see.
What features do you think we might see if we walk down the path to High Street, turning left and walking towards the Tollgate roundabout. Then turning left again onto Moira Road walking along heading to New Road and back through the park to school?
Check back next week to see what we did see along the way

In Maths this week we are beginning to use the operation 'add +' using 2 single digit numbers. We have been using the Part Whole model to help find pairs of numbers that go together to make 5. The whole is the bigger number and the parts are the 2 parts we have split or partitioned the whole number into
![]() |
![]() |
Here we have split the five into 2 parts. How many other ways could you split 5?
We then looked at how we can use this putting groups of objects together and beginning to record it as an addition calculation.
Here we have used the numbers in the Part whole model to form calculations. We have learned that
3 + 2 = 5 AND 2 + 3 = 5
So ... Can you solve this problem?
5 = ? + ?
Is there only 1 answer?

In English this week we have been learning about the features of Non - Fiction texts.
Children have been looking at Non Fiction books this week and trying to identify some of the key features. We looked at the differences between Fiction and Non-Fiction texts.
Fiction books are made up stories with a plot, characters and events. They need to be read from the beginning to the end for the story to make sense.
![]() |
Non-Fiction books are books that contain facts and information about the Book title. These books can be read in ANY order using the contents page to choose a chapter. We should learn something from the book that we didn't know before.
We have been learning that Non Fiction might have :
Encourage your child to find these features within a Non Fiction book, can they tell you a fact that they can remember from the book?
Reminders for next week:

In Maths this week we have been subtracting and finding the difference between 2 numbers using a number line. For subtraction we started at the biggest number and jumped back along the number line to the other number in the calculation. The number we landed on was the answer.
For example 10 - 6 =
We start at the 10 and jump back 6 jumps landing on the number 4
so 10 - 6 = 4
When finding the difference between 2 numbers we started on the biggest number and jumped back to the other number. We counted how many jumps we made between the 2 numbers
For example finding the difference between 9 and 5
We start at 9 and jump back to the number 5 counting 4 jumps.
so the difference between 9 and 5 is 4

In English this week we have been sharing the story:
![]() |
We made predictions ahead of reading about what we thought might happen in this story.
Look carefully ... What do you think might happen and why ?
We have used this story to help us to think about using the 'ed' suffix. We use the 'ed' suffix when writing in the past tense. We add it to a 'root' word to change its meaning from present to past tense

![]() |
Children decided which one they would like to create in their own style. They sketched out an outline and then chose which media they would like to use to add the bright colours. We could use paint, pastels or wax crayons. Children have tried really hard to develop their skills and techniques to complete this work.
Look below at Amelia, Jessica, Georgie and Layla's Artwork ... can you tell which of Steven Brown's work they have created in their own style?

Welcome back we hope you had a lovely Half Term and are refreshed and ready for the new term.
Blue Class had a huge shock when they came back on Monday. They were shocked to discover something had been in school and into some of the classrooms!
There was straw and sawdust, bits of potato, carrot and banana scattered all over the corridor and classroom floors! There were some footprints on tables and along the corridors. Tables and chairs were tipped up and equipment strewn over the floor. We didn't know what it might have been or if it was still somewhere in school! We looked for clues that might help us to find out what had been in to school and recorded our findings.
LOOK carefully at the photos below
What a Mess!
What do you think came into our school ?

This week in Blue Class we have been learning about mammals, reptiles and insects. We have been looking closely at what features these animals have to help us decide which animal category they belong to.
We looked at a variety of animals and used our knowledge to decide whether it was a mammal or not.
How can you tell if an animal is a mammal?
Here Stefan and Maisie have sorted mammals and not mammals. Can you name any of these ?
![]() |
![]() |
Reptiles
![]() |
We also have looked at features of a variety of reptiles and how they differ from mammals for example mammals are warm blooded but reptiles are cold blooded.
![]() |
We have also looked at insects and their classification features.
How many legs does an insect have?
Is a spider and insect?
Are insects warm or cold blooded?
How many insects can you name?
Thank you for taking the time to share our learning journey with us.
Next week we will be learning more about the classification features of birds and amphibians

Science and Engineering Week.
On Monday we took part in a whole Federation Science event. We were paired with Class 6 and then put into teams of 4 or 5. We were told that we had been stranded on a desert island and we needed to try and survive until help came to find us.
What would be the first things you would need to do in order to survive?
The first thing we decided was to look for water and we came across a lagoon however it was full of rocks, sand, mud and salt so we knew it would not be safe to drink.
We were challenged to try and make the water safe to drink using only an empty cup, filter paper, blue roll and a plastic bag.
Look at the pictures below to see how we got on
Here we are using a filter paper to sift out the dirty water, rocks and sand.
Here are we pouring the water through the filter paper.
We discovered that if we poured the water too quickly it ripped the filter paper.
We managed to make the water clear but not completely clean.
We thoroughly enjoyed working with our junior partners and look forward to doing it again soon !

Year 1 had a very special visit this week from Olly who brought with him some very unusual creatures. We were able to have a much closer look at these creatures and if we were feeling really brave we could stroke them and even hold them!
Olly explained that these creatures were very friendly and could not hurt us.
Here Jake is holding 'Gary the Giant Snail' Olly is holding Sheldon a baby giant snail. He told us that they could both live for up to 10 years!
What was Gary and Sheldon's favourite food?
Here Millie and Stefan are holding 'Max the millipede' who is 2 years old. We learned that his skeleton is on the outside of his body and when he gets scared he curls up into a ball to protect himself.
![]() |
![]() |
Can you remember how many legs Max has?
This is Tallulah the Tarantula. She can be very scared of people so she stayed in her box. Olly told us that in the wild when they get really scared Tarantulas can flick hairs off their bodies to warn off predators. These can really sting if they stick in you!
![]() |
![]() |
Can you remember how many eyes Tallulah has?
Here Layla, Ashton and Ava are holding Giant hissing Coakroaches which are both called Samantha. We learned that they have very sticky feet, SO sticky that they can hang upside down and that they will eay ANYTHING!
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
We also met Orin the corn snake who is 6 years old. Orin has no ears and smells with her tongue. Olly told us she finds it easier to move across rough surfaces than smooth ones.

We hope you have a lovely Easter break and look forward to seeing you on Monday the 9th April
Please remember that Tuesday 10th April is our Year 1 school trip to Twycross Zoo. Children should come in school uniform as usual but MUST wear sensible footwear, bring a waterproof coat and a packed lunch. No Fizzy drinks or sweets as normal and they will not need a water bottle for this day thank you
![]() |
Blue Class braved the rain and cold to see as many animals as we could at Twycross Zoo. We had a lovely time looking closely at the animals and watching them in their environments. Being up so close to these animals meant that we could see the hair on the elephants back, the beautiful colours of the butterflies and Lorikeets and the strong tail of the Kangaroo as it balanced itself. We could also see that the stripes of a Zebra are not black like we think they are, they are actually more brown!
Why does a Zebra have stripes?
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
We were amazed at just how tall a Giraffe really is, we would only come upto its knees!
#
Why is the Giraffes's food hung up high in the ceiling ?
We giggled at the cheeky Chimp who chased up and down the window trying to make us jump and at the penguin who thought Millie's coat was a BIG fish!
![]() |
![]() |
Why does a penguin have webbed feet?
We would like to thank ALL of Blue Class for making us so proud with their sensible behaviour all day
We would also like to thank you for your continued support which allowed us to make the day a great success
Have a look below at some of the other animals we saw at the Zoo.
This week we have introduced our new topic
Ready
Steady
Grow
We will be finding out about plants and trees which grow in the United Kingdom and what they need to grow healthily.
We came into the classroom and discovered a letter, an envelope full of different seeds and a scarecrow!
The scarecrow had dropped the packets of seeds and they were now all mixed up. Scarecrow asked for our help to try to sort them out. Once we had sorted them each group chose a set of seeds to plant. We were really impressed with how the children knew how to plant a seed and what it needed to grow well. We are looking forward to seeing how the seeds change and what they will grow into because the scarecrow had lost the packets.
We went for a walk around the school grounds to see what different plants and trees were growing.
Can you remember the names of any of plants that we saw?
Can you explain why some trees are called evergreen ?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Next week we will be finding out ...
Do plants need air water and sunlight to grow?
|
In topic over the last few weeks we have been looking at what plants need to grow to be healthy. In order to solve this we planted some cress seeds in different conditions -
Pot 1 - sunlight and water.
Pot 2 - sunlight but no water.
Pot 3 - water but no sunlight.
Pot 4 - no sunlight and no water.
We predicted that the seeds which had sunlight and water would grow and the others would not. On Tuesday we looked at the pots to see which had grown. We were shocked to discover that the seeds that had been in the dark but had been given water had grown. However, the cress was not healthy as it was yellow not green. The seeds which did not have any water did not grow at all - we concluded that seeds need water and sunlight to grow healthily.
Reminders
Thank you for taking the time to see what we have been learning in Blue Class
Well it's the end of another busy term !
When we come back it will soon be time for the Phonics Screening Test.
Please remember to practise your Phonics over the holidays, we have sent a pack of words home again for you.
Look across each word ... What can you spot?
Is it a real or nonsense word ?
Is there a blend ... how many letters in the blend ?
Can you spot any digraphs or trigraphs ?
Is there a magic 'e' ?
If it didn't sound right can a sounds be said in a different way ?
Remember to sound each word out carefully even if you think you know it as some words look similar e.g from / form
We will see you all on Tuesday 5th June with PE Kits please as Year 1 have PE the first Tuesday back
Thank you for your conuinued support over this term ... have a lovely holiday
Welcome back we hope you have had a lovely Easter break and are refreshed ready to try to answer our new topic question:
Can I Have Green Fingers?
In this topic we will be learning about how plants and trees grow and change.
To launch our topic we went on a walk around the school grounds to see what plants and trees we could find.
Look at all the things we found!

We then looked at the different parts of a plant and learned about how each part helps the plant to grow.
We learned that :
Well done Ethan and Elsie you remembered lots of facts about a plant.
![]() |
![]() |
As part of our topic we are going to carry out an investigation to find out the best conditions for growing plants.
We used what we already know about what plants need to grow to decide where cress might grow best. We knew that they need sunlight, water and air so we sprinkled cress seeds over soil in 3 different pots and placed each pot into a place where it will get the conditions needed for our investigation.
First we filled the pots with soil ...
Next we watered the soil in pot 2 and pot 3 ...
Then we sprinkled on the cress seeds ...
Finally we placed the pots into a suitable place where they would get the right conditions needed for the investigation. We placed Pot 1 and pot 3 in the window and pot 2 into a box where it would be dark.

This week in Topic we have been learning about a famous artist William Morris. We learned that he lived and worked during Victorian times and was inspired by the natural world. He used natural objects like stones, feathers, flowers and leaves to create his designs which were used to design wallpaper and fabrics for furniture covers.
If you look closely at his designs you can see how they repeat or reflect.
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
We have been developing our art skills further using paint to print designs using fruit, vegetables and leaves
Here Elsie has printed using half a pear and a piece of celery to create her design and Jake printed his design using half a potato and apple.
![]() |
![]() |
What do you notice about their designs?
We worked in pairs to create a printing tile of a flower using pva glue and string.
First we drew our flower shape onto some cardboard. Here James and Enya are tracing over the pencil line with the glue.
Here we are cutting lengths of string and laying them to create our flower outline starting with the centre of the flower and then creating the petal shapes.
This was very tricky and very sticky!

Next week we will be using these to recreate a piece of art work by another famous artist. Check back next week to see if you can guess who it is.
We concluded our investigation from last week looking back at the 3 pots of cress seeds we planted under different conditions. Here are our findings
Pot 1 - light but no water.
The cress seeds had not grown.
Pot 2 - water but no light
The cress seeds had grown in the dark BUT they were not green healthy plants.
Pot 3 - water and light
The cress seeds had grown a little bit, we could just see a green leaf poking out of the soil
What does this tell you about what a plant needs?
Can you explain what has happened?

In English this week we have been re-writing a traditional tale with a twist. After sharing the story of The Enormous Turnip last week we decided this week to write our own versions by changing part or parts of the story. Children suggested they could change the turnip to another fruit or vegetable and the characters to someone of their own choice.
Read Alex, Enya and Kayla's fabulous versions of The Enormous ...

In Maths this week we have been reviewing finding 1 more or 1 less than a number upto 100.
Previously we learned how to find 1 more and 1 less by saying
e.g. 1 more than 18 is … or 1 less than 20 is …
This week it was a little harder as we had to find the number that a given number was 1 more or 1 less than
for example: 45 is 1 less than …
We had to understand which direction to move on a numberline or hundred square to find the correct number.

Reminder for next week:
Monday 15th May - Parents Open Afternoon 2pm - 3pm
Please only 1 adult per child as we are very short on space and seats and we want you to enjoy your time in school.
Parents Open Afternoon
How lovely it was to see grown ups come and enjoy spending time with their children this afternoon. We had lots of fun working with a partner giving and following instructions to create two identical flowers in a vase.
Look at our fantastic flowers below!
We hope you all had a lovely time and look forward to seeing you again soon
This week in Topic we have been preparing, making and eating delicious fruit kebabs!
We have had a chance to chop up some different fruits. We found that some of the fruits were really easily to cut like the banana and strawberry but some were a little harder like the apple and the plum.
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
We tasted a piece of each fruit to help us decide what fruits we wanted to make our kebab. Most children liked the strawberry, apple, plum, grapes and banana but some did not like the orange and pineapple.
Once we had decided what fruits we wanted we selected them and put them on a cocktail stick to make our kebab
Look at our delicious kebabs below !
Which kebab would you like to eat ?
In Maths we are beginning to learn about Multiplication. In Year 1 we focus on Multiplication using 2's 5's and 10's
First we looked at doubling. This is where we add a number to itself
For example: double 2 is the same as 2 + 2 or 2 x 2
Then we looked at repeated addition. This is where we add the same number again and again in order to find the answer to a multiplication problem.
Here Kayla has counted how many flowers are in each column and she has written the repeated addition underneath. She then counted in 2 to find her answer. She also showed this as a Multiplication calculation.
Well done Kayla
We also have been learning how to use an array to answer Multiplication questions.
Children have learned that there are 'Steps to Success' for using an array in Multiplication these are:
* Photos of children's work to follow
Thank you for taking the time to share our working week in school
Sunflowers
Blue Class would like to share with you their version of Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers from our previous art lession.
This week we are closing our Topic for this term.
We have looked at how our sunflowers have grown and changed since we planted the seeds. Most of them have grown a stem and either 2 or 4 leaves. We have measured how much our plants have grown and recorded this information into our 'Sunflower Diaries'. We have brought these home along with our plants to record the next two entries in our neatest handwriting (tall letters tall and small letters small) as part of our homework. We will need to return just the completed diaries after the holidays to share what has happened to our sunflower plants.
We wonder whose plant will have grown the most!
Remember to put your plant in a sensible place so that it will continue to grow well and water it a little every day if needed.
We have also been learning about the difference between Evergreen and Deciduous trees. We now know that Evergreen trees have their leaves all year round yet Deciduous trees shed their leaves each Autumn.
Here Lily and Isla have found 2 trees around our school.
Which tree is a Evergreen tree?
![]() |
![]() |
We closed our Topic by holding a quiz about everything we have learned in this Topic. We had 7 teams and they had to answer questions about things they had learned this term.
How well will you do ?
What 3 things do plants need to grow healthily?
What happens to deciduous trees in Autumn?
Name 3 fruits and 3 vegetables
Bonus point - Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?
What about a cucumber ?
What flower did Van Gogh use in his famous painting?
Wht are the petals on a flower bright and colourful?
and finally ...
Can you have Green Fingers ?

Well we hope you have enjoyed finding out what we have been doing during our first week back.
Check back next week to see where our learning journey takes us next week.
Remember next week it will the Year 1 Phonic Screening Test. Please encourage your child to spot blends (br fl str nd sk), digraphs (sounds with 2 letters), trigraphs (sounds with 3 letters ear, air) split digraphs (magic 'e') and to remember if a digraph can be pronounced in 2 ways to sound talk with each sound and decide which word sounds right (oo, ea). There are some links to websites for you to practise on the Tear 1 home page.
Blue Class have now all completed their Phonic Screening Test and we are all incredibly proud of their hard work and effort. Also we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support at home.
In Topic we have been learning about where hot and cold areas of the world are and why. We learned about the Equator which is an imaginary line around the middle of the Earth at an equal distance from the North Pole and the South Pole.Places that are close to the equator are hotter. This is because the sun directly shines on this part of the Earth
Here Levi has shown that he knows where hot and cold places are on the Earth.
Click on Levi's work to learn more about this.
Well done Levi for remembering a fact about the North Pole
![]() |
![]() |
We have also learned about people who live in hot and cold climates. We learned about the Inuits and the Maasai tribe and how they manage to survive the climate they live in.
Can you remember where the Maasai people live?
What do the Inuits and Maasai need to survive such hot and cold climates?
What facts can you remember about the Inuits and the Maasai tribe?
Read what Elsie remembered about the Inuits and how they live.

BLUE CLASS UPDATE
What a busy few weeks we have had. We have completed the Phonics Screening test ... we have had our Centenary Celebration Afternoon ... AND we have been to meet our new Teachers in Year 2.
We are very proud of everyone with the Phonics Screening Test, there were some very tricky words but everyone tried there very best and Mrs Baird was impressed. Your child's results will be in their School Report which will be given out next week.
We would like to thank you for support at home
The Centenary Celebration afternoon was a huge success and everyone enjoyed the picnic with their grown ups and the delicious food from the Gurkha Express. There were lots fun activities around school and the wonderful showcase of work that children put together. We are incredibly grateful for all your support and for the amazing amount of money raised to help build the school in Nepal.
Everyone had a good time in their new classes. They met their teacher and Teaching Assistant and made lots of new friends in their new class. They were introduced to their class mascot and were kept busy with lots of fun activities. Though we are glad that Blue Class children had a lovely time in their new classes we are very happy to have them back for the last few weeks before we have to say our good byes !
And so another year has come and gone and with great sadness it is now time to say goodbye. If we had a choice we would keep them for another year but to allow them to grow and learn we have to send them on their way. We would like to take this opportunity to share how fantastic all your children have been, it's been an absolute pleasure to have been part of their learning journey. We would also like to thank you all for your kind words and continued support throughout the year without this they may not have made the steps they have.
The class of 2016 -2017
We would both like to thank you very much for your generosity and have been overwhelmed by the lovely gifts received
Each year we are asked to choose just one child who has been our Star of the Year. Every year it gets so hard to just pick 1 child as they are all stars in our eyes. This year we picked a young lady who has come so far since September. She wasn't sure about Year 1 when she joined us but eventually realised that we were there to help her succeed in everything she wanted to achieve and since tries so hard in everything she does.
Our Star of the Year is ...
Kayla
Well Done Kayla
We would also like to say a HUGE well done to these 12 children who have followed our School Rules and stayed on the sunshine ALL year.
Well Done all of you
They wear their medals with pride.
Please have a lovely holiday and we hope to still see you around school in September.
